PURPOSE:To produce oxo gas relatively easily, at a low cost, by forming methyl formate by the catalytic reaction of a CO-containing gas with methanol, condensing and separating the methyl formate, and subjecting to catalytic decomposition. CONSTITUTION:The feed gas 1 containing CO is mixed with methanol 10, and the mixed gas 2 is introduced into the catalytic reactor 3 and converted to methyl formate by the catalytic reaction. The reaction is carried out at 50-150 deg.C preferably under the reaction pressure of >=100atm in the presence of a catalyst such as alcoholate, barium oxide, etc. The mixed gas 4 composed of produced methyl formate and unreacted gas is cooled indirectly with a coolant to effect the condensation of the methyl formate in the mixed gas, and is separated into methyl formate 7 and gas 6 by the separator 5. The separated methyl formate is decomposed to an oxo gas (H2:CO=1:1) in the catalytic reactor 8.
