PURPOSE:To separate satisfactorily a character, etc., irrespective of a background and a change in illumination by using the density distribution of an original picture in a candidate area including a sepcific one and binarizing light and dark picture data. CONSTITUTION:The video output of a television camera 10 is inputted to a picture memory 20, and its noise is reduced in a picture pretreatment circuit 30. Moreover a differential circuit 40 emphasizes an edge. A binarizing circuit 50 binarizes picture data with the aid of a binary threshold level set by a microcomputer 80, which decides the candidate area including a specific area such as a character from the light and dark picture of the original one, and obtains the binarythreshold level with the use of the density distribution of the original picture in the area. This binary picture is expanded by an expanding circuit 60, and a histogram processing circuit 70 obtains the density frequency distribution and binary frequency distribution of the light and dark picture. |
