PURPOSE:To record information accurately by optimizing the speed of recording and reproduction, laser power, and a focus tracking control circuit when different kinds of recording disks are used by the same optical information recording and reproducing device. CONSTITUTION:A signal from a photointerrupter PI3 is used to judge whether a recording disk 10 is loaded or not, and when the disk 10 is loaded, signals from photointerrupters PI2 and PI1 are inputted. Then when both the PI2 and PI1 are both shielded from the rays of light, the recording disk has a maximum diameter D1, the speed of recording and reproduction and laser power are set to CL1 and P1 respectively, and the servo gain of the focus tracking control circuit 3 is set to G1. Then when the PI2 is shielded and the PI1 photodetects light, it is judged that the diameter of the disk is D2, the speed of recording and reproduction is set to CL2, and the laser power is set to P2. Further, it is judged that the disk diameter is D3 unless the diameter is D1 and D2, the speed of recording and reproduction and laser power are set to CL3 and P3 respectively, and the servo gain of the circuit 3 is set to G3.
