PURPOSE:To use the storage areas of a memory effectively even when the pieces of document information differ in length and the number of them is different by providing a control pointer which indicates a storage area for document information and a storage area for label information without discriminating them previously. CONSTITUTION:Neither a text area 23 nor a label area 25 is initially present; a label area pointer 21 indicates a bottom address +1 and a free area pointer 22 indicates the top address of a free area 24. Label information is written in address decreasing order successively from the bottom address at every time new document information is written and corresponding document information, on the other hand, is written in address increasing order from the top address of the free area 24. Then, the contents of the label area pointer 21 and free area pointer 22 are so rewritten as to indicate the starting addresses of a new label area 25 and a new free area 24.
