[Also in Division C3] A composite artificial tooth comprises a synthetic resin portion which includes at least a part of the base surface 6 and the adjacent wall surfaces 8, and a dental ceramic portion 4, the synthetic resin portion allowing ease of bonding to a synthetic resin denture base, the synthetic resin portion being integrally connected to the ceramic portion by a silane chemical bonding agent. The resin portion and the ceramic portion may be also held together by undercut keying formations (Figures 10- 13, not shown) in addition to the silane bonding composition. Synthetic resins suitable to comprise the first portion are exemplified and include polymerized acrylates, methacrylates, and vinyls, polycarbonates, and epoxy resins, and autocuring plastics. The dental ceramic may comprise porcelain and the silane bonding compositions is exemplified. Methods for preparing artificial teeth are described and include forming a porcelain veneer, adding a porcelain backing, exposing the tooth to boiling water, applying the bonding agent, and adding the portion of synthetic resin. |
