PURPOSE:To obtain an optically active compound of optical isomer mixture of the titled compound useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals, by resolving a mixture of optical isomers of the phtalic acid monoester of the titled compound with an optically active amine, and hydrolyzing the resolved compound. CONSTITUTION:An isomer mixture containing 2-4 kinds of the compound of formula (the wavy line represents the alpha- or beta-configuration), especially containing (3S)(5R)-isomer and (3R)(5S)-isomer or (3S)(5S)-isomer and (3R)(5R)- isomer at an arbitrary ratio is made to react with an optically active amine, especially (S)-(-)- or (R)-(+)-alpha-methylbenzylamine to form an amine salt, and at least 1-4 kinds of optical isomers are preferentially separated therefrom. The accumulated optical isomer is hydrolyzed, and if necessary, the 5-epimer is separated to obtain the optically active isomer of optical isomer mixture of the titled compound useful as an intermediate of prostagladin.
