In the desulphurisation of gases leaving a fire hearth where combustion occurs together with agglomeration of ash to form slag, in which a desulphurising agent is fed to the combustion zone or above this zone, the desulphurising agent, the desulphurisation products, the ash and the non-combustibles are sepd. from the flue gases and part of the sepd. products are blown back into or above the hearth. The novelty is that (i) the desulphurising agent has a finer particle size than the mean particle size of the entrained dust arising from the fuel; (ii) the ash and the non-combustibles are blown back into the hearth in an agglomeration-promoting zone; (iii) part of the desulphurising agent and the desulphurisation products are blown back above the hearth at a height at which a desulphurisation-promoting temp. is obtd. while avoiding agglomeration; and (v) the degree of desulphurising agent recirculation is several times greater than that of dust recirculation. A plant for carrying out the process is also claimed.
