PURPOSE:To enable the preventive maintenance of a faulty clip by providing a faulty tenter clip detector with a reference clip detector, a circuit for judging a faulty clip mark on a film, and a circuit for calculating the position of the faulty clip. CONSTITUTION:A clip mark on the margin 11a of a film 11 and the configuration of the margin 11a are detected by a film clip mark detectors 60a and 60b and a detection signal is fed to a central control unit 70. A reference clip detector 71 feeds a signal indicative of the passage of a reference clip to the control unit 70. A circuit 72 for judging a faulty clip mark compares the detection signal fed from the detectors 60a and 60b with a preset reference value for judging a faulty clip mark and a signal indicative of the judgment is fed to the control unit 70. When a signal indicative of a faulty mark is produced by the circuit 72, a circuit 73 for calculating the position of the faulty clip calculates that the Nth clip from the reference clip is faulty and feeds a signal indicative thereof to the control unit 70. A faulty clip display 74 displays the result N of the calculation. A marking device 75 marks the faulty clip based on a signal from the circuit 73.
