PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for the preparation of an antiulceragent, economically, in high yield, by using an inexpensive toluene derivative as a raw material, and brominating the compound. CONSTITUTION:The toluene derivative of formula I (X is halogen) is made to react with a bromination agent selected from N-bromosuccinimide and bromine, in a solvent, preferably in carbon tetrachloride, preferably in the presence of a free radical reaction initiator, at 70-150 deg.C, especially at 80-100 deg.C to obtain the objective compound of formula II. The amount of the bromination agent is 0.5-2 equilvane,t preferably 0.7-1.3 equivalent based on the compound of formula I. The free radical reaction initiator is light, azobisisobutyronitrile, or their combination. The amount of the agent is 0.5-20wt%, preferably 5-15% of the raw material compound of formula I.
