PURPOSE:To automatically mesh gears irrespectively of a position of teeth of the gears, by checking a meshed condition of the gears, and rotating the gears by half a tooth to let the gears contact with each other again unless the gears are meshed. CONSTITUTION:A tooth of a second gear 2 is brought into contact with a a tooth flank of a first gear 1 while the second gear 2 is rotated. If the second gear 2 is properly meshed with the first gear 1, a proper meshed condition is indicated by an output from a sensor 21. If the second gear 2 is not properly meshed with the first gear 1, no output is generated from the sensor 21, and accordingly, a cylinder 18 is automatically retracted to separate the second gear 2 from the first gear 1. Then, the second gear 2 is rotated by half a tooth by means of a motor 14. Then, the cylinder 18 is advanced again to bring the second gear 2 into contact with the first gear 1. Accordingly, a proper mesh between the first and second gears 1 and 2 may be automatically obtained.
