PURPOSE:To obtain a permanent magnet alloy undergoing no deterioration in the magnetic characteristics by subjecting an alloy having a prescribed composition to crushing in a hydrogen atmosphere, dehydrogenation and mechanical pulverization. CONSTITUTION:A permanent magnet alloy contg. a rare earth element and a transition metal is crushed in a hydrogen atmosphere, dehydrogenated by heat treatment at about 100-800 deg.C, and pulverized by a conventional mechanical means. This method is preferably applied to a rare earth element-iron permanent magnet alloy which is difficult to grind mechanically. By this method, the time required to finish pulverization is reduced, and the grain size is easily regulated. The activity of theresulting powder is reduced, and a stable permanent magnet alloy having uniform magnetic characteristics is obtd.
