PURPOSE:A photochromic substance applicable to sunglasses, optical filter, curtain, etc., having coloring performance, consisting of a specific spiro naphthooxazine derivative. CONSTITUTION:A photochromic substance shown by the formula (one of X1 and X2 is OH, and the other is H; X3 and X4 are H, 1-4C alkyl, 1-3C alkoxy, halogen, nitro, or cyano; R is 1-30C straight-chain alkyl). To sythesize the substance, for example, 1-nitroso-2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene, etc. is reacted with indole iodide in the presence of triethylamine.
