PURPOSE:To obtain low-alloy iron powder for a sintered material having superior compactibility at a low cost by mixing low-alloy iron powder contg. Fe-Mo with Ni powder, subjecting the powdery mixture to reduction treatment at a specified temp., and grinding the resulting caked aggregate. CONSTITUTION:Low-iron powder consisting of, by weight, <=0.055 C, 0.2-2.0% Mo, 0.5-2.0% O2 and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities and contg. Mo in the form of Fe-Mo is prepd. The powder is mixed with 0.5-4.0% Ni powder or Ni oxide powder, and the powdery mixture is subjected to reduction treatment in a nonoxidizing atmosphere by heating at 800-1,000 deg.C for 20-120min and slow cooling. The resulting caked aggregate is ground to obtain low-alloy iron powder contg. <=0.20% O2 in said composition. This low-alloy iron powder has superior compactibility and can increase the strength of a sintered material.
