PURPOSE:To produce the titled resin having excellent heat-resistance, softness and flexibility, etc., by using 2,8-diaminodiphenylene oxide as an aromatic diamine component, and reacting the component with an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, thereby forming an imide ring. CONSTITUTION:The objective resin can be produced by (1) dissolving 2,8- diaminodiphenylene oxide as an aromatic diamine component and an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (e.g. pyromellitic dianhydride) in an organic polar solvent (e.g. N,N-dimethylformamide) and carrying out the cyclization reaction preferably in an inert gas atmosphere at about 0-100 deg.C (preferably about 20 deg.C), and (2) subjecting the resultant polyamic acid product to the thermal dehydration treatment (preferably at 200-400 deg.C). USE:Coating film, heat-resistant insulating film, etc.
