PURPOSE:To solubilize coal in solvent under a relatively mild reaction condition without using expensive hydrogen, catalyst, etc., by adding a metal and an alkyl halide to coal, and heat-treating the coal at normal pressure at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:Coal is blended with (A) 0.5 (most preferably 3-6 times) as much a metal (preferable example, transition metal such as Zn, Fe, Cu, Cd, etc., alkaline earth metal such as Ba, Mg, etc., Al, etc.) as the coal, and (B) an alkyl halide (the fittest example, butyl iodide), heat-treated normal pressure at 130-170 deg.C (preferably 130-150 deg.C), so that the coal is solubilized in a solvent. YUBARI coal, pacific coal, KAIRAN coal is esepcially effective as the coal.
