PURPOSE:To permit coloration and discoloration with low electric power consumption and to improve the life, response speed and contrast ratio of a titled element by forming the element into the laminated structure consisting of a transparent conductive electrode, EC electrode, ion exchange (IE) membrane and counter electrode and using the specific composite IE for the IE film. CONSTITUTION:The two-layered composite IE membrane consisting of the IE membrane layer of which the functional group is a cation exchange group and the IE membrane layer of which the functional group is an anion exchange group is used for the IE layer of an ECD made of the laminated structure consisting of the transparent conductive film, EC film, IE membrane and counter electrode. The composite IE membrane made of the three-layered constitution consisting of the IE layer which is the cation exchange group, the neutral thin film which is not bound with the IE group and the IE thin membrane which is the cation exchange group may be used for the IE membrane. The response speed of the ECD device is improved and the contrast ratio and life thereof are improved by using such composite IE membrane.
