In a rotary internal combustion engine, comprising an engine power section, an annular working chamber, in which a working piston arranged on a piston shaft is capable of oscillating movement, an air or combustion mixture feed device, which includes a scavenging piston, which is capable of oscillating movement in an annular scavenging chamber and is arranged diametrically to the working piston on the piston shaft, it being possible to feed air or a combustion mixture through scavenging ports into the working chamber, in conjunction with a favourable mixture preparation, measures are proposed for reducing intake loss and precompression and for optimising the overall dimensions and power transmission of the driving mechanism. Compared to conventional reciprocating piston engines, the rotary internal combustion engine according to the invention requires only one third of the weight, overall dimensions and manufacturing costs, economy being increased by an up to 40% lower fuel consumption, in particular compared to conventional two-stroke engines.
