PURPOSE:To obtain a small-size and simple device requiring no illuminating systems neither image pickup optical system by using an infrared sensor as an image pickup element. CONSTITUTION:An infrared sensor 6 is used as the image pickup element. For example, infrared sensors 6 are arranged with heat insulating layers 8 among them for the purpose of cutting off thermal influences between sensors, and a spacer 7 is provided between sensors 6 and a read surface 1 and is used to protect sensors 6 also. In case of scanning, a temperature distribution along patterns of images and characters on the read surface 1, namely, heat radiation is read by infrared sensors 6.
