A system for converting heat energy (at 18) into electrical or other forms of energy comprises a closed hydraulic circuit for a liquid (4) such as mercury, including an upcomer tube (8), a reservoir (2) and a downcomer tube (6) associated with a power generator such as a magneto-hydrodynamic generator (12). A fluid of lower boiling point is injected (14) into the upcomer tube (8), and causes the first liquid (4) to circulate. The cross-sectional area of the upcomer tube (8) increases upwardly, to reduce friction and acceleration losses. In an alternative (not shown), several such stages are arranged in series, with the upcomers (8) successively larger from stage to stage. |
