A cylinder lock comprises an inner cylinder 4 rotatably mounted in an outer cylinder 2 and provided with a key-guide means 5; first tumbler pin portions 10 slidably mounted in a row of main bores 7 in the inner cylinder for engagement by a key 8 when inserted in said key-guide means; and second tumbler pin portions 13 slidably mounted in a row of main bores 3 in the outer cylinder and spring-loaded to enter the row of main bores in the inner cylinder, engaging said first tumbler pin portions, in the locking condition of the lock; the two rows of main bores extending in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the inner cylinder and being disposed such that the axes of these main bores individually lie in planes at right angles to said longitudinal axis and together, in the locking condition of the lock, lie in a common plane extending parallel to or containing said longitudinal axis, which common plane H, when the key is inserted in said key-guide means, extends substantially normally of a surface portion of the key; said surface portion of the key being provided with first recesses for engaging said first tumbler pin portions; the cylinder lock further comprising additional bores 1, 14 formed in a row in said inner cylinder and in a row in said outer cylinder; third tumbler pin portions 16 slidably mounted in the additional bores 14 in said inner cylinder for engagement by said key when inserted in said key-guide means, the third tumbler pin portions being so movable independently of each other and of said first tumbler pin portions; and fourth tumbler pin portions 17 slidably mounted in the additional bores 1 in said outer cylinder and spring-loaded to enter the row of additional bores in said inner cylinder, engaging said third tumbler pin portions, in the looking condition of the lock; the two rows of additional bores extending in the direction of said longitudinal axis of said inner cylinder and the axes of the additional bores of each row lying, in the locking condition of the lock, in a plane E 1 , E 2 , inclined with respect to said common plane H of the axes of the main bores and disposed such that when the key is inserted in said guide means in this condition of the lock the plane of the axes of each row of additional bores is inclined with respect to said surface portion of the key; said surface portion of the key being provided with second recesses for engaging said third tumbler pin portions and the axes of these second recesses being inclined with respect to said surface portion of the key in accordance with the angle of inclination, in the locking condition of the lock, of the plane of the axes of each row of additional bores with respect to said surface portion of the key. In the construction shown there are two rows of additional bores and tumbler pin portions arranged up planes El, E2 which do not pass through the axis A of the cylinder 4 but pass through a line parallel and below the axis A. The main pin portions 10 each have a conical inner end portion which engages a said recess in the side of the key and the additional pin portion 16 similarly have conical inner end portions which engage the second recesses provided in the key; there are four main pins in each row each made-up of a portion 10 and a portion 13 and the pin axes of one row are offset compared with the axes of the other row so that the recesses in the sides of the key are not opposite each other; there are two auxiliary pins each made up of a portion 1 and a portion 16 in each row and their axes are similarly offset. The key is so made that there are two rows of recesses for each row of tumbler pins, one row of recesses on each side of the key, so that the key can be put into the key slot either way up. Instead of two rows of additional tumbler pins, only one row is provided in a modification and in another modification there are four rows of additional tumbler pins; two rows above the main tumbler pins and two rows below; when there are two or more additional rows, the rows need not be at the same angle of inclination to the axial plane of the main tumbler pins and the axial planes of the additional rows can pass through the axis of the cylinder 4 if desired. The additional tumbler pins are shown as being smaller in size than the main pins but they could be the same size or larger if desired; it is also stated that the spacing of the pins in the rows can be irregular.</p>
