PURPOSE:To deactivate type B hepatitis virus without causing loss of useful components, by irradiating blood with ultraviolet rays with specific intensity while circulating the blood through a treating chamber consisting of ultraviolet permeable glass. CONSTITUTION:Type B hepatitis virus is deactivated by irradiating blood ultraviolet rays which are transmitted through ultraviolet permeable glass and adjusted to 1,0004n5,000muw/cm<2> ultraviolet intensity in a treating chamber consisting of the ultraviolet permeable glass while circulating the blood in the treating chamber. Heat treatment or chemical treatment is carried out as a method for deactivating type B hepatitis virus, but it has the problem of denaturation of useful components such as albumin globulin, fibrinogen, etc. in blood (plasma). In the method of ultraviolet irradiation, HBs antigen value in blood is lowered in a short time, and destruction of the useful components is extremely a little. The irradiation time is usually 120min, and both HBs antigen value and HBe antigen value are extremely reduced.
