NEW MATERIAL:The enaminocarboxylic acid derivative of formula [R<1> and R<3> are lower alkyl; R<2> is H or alkyl; R<4> is (substituted) aralkyl]. EXAMPLE:3-Aminocrotonic acid 3-(N-benzyl-N-methylamino)-2,2-dimethylpro pylester. USE:A synthetic intermediate of a 4-phenyl-1,4-dihydropyridine derivative useful as a remedy for circulatory diseases having long-acting hypotensive activity. It has phyriological activity in itself, and is useful as pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by condensing 1 equivalent of the beta-ketocarboxylic acid derivative of formula II with preferably 1.0 equivalent or large excess of the amine of formula III. The amount of the amine of formulaIII is preferably large excess when R<2> is H, and 1.0-3.0 equivalent when R<2> is other than H.
