PURPOSE:To granulate the titled compound useful as a dye intermediate, pulp digestion assistant, etc., economically on an industrial acale, by cooling the molten liquid containing 1,4,4a,9a-tetrahydroanthraquinone in an aqueous medium in the form of fine particles. CONSTITUTION:Naphthoquinone is made to react with a conjugated diene in an inert organic solvent, and a specific amount of the solvent is distilled out from the reaction solution composed mainly of 1,4,4a,9a-tetrahydroanthraquinone (abbreviated to THAQ) to obtain a molten liquid. The molten liquid is sprayed into a space containing the mist of an aqueous medium for cooling such as water sprayed from the top, and dropped into the cooling aqueous medium stored below the space. The liquid is cooled in the medium in the form of dispersion to obtain fine granules having a particle diameter of 0.1-3mm. EFFECT:A large-sized apparatus is not necessary in the present process. Since the process is carried out in wet state, the compound can be granulated safely and easily. Since the amount of the solvent to be removed from the THAQ- cotaining reaction liquid is as low as 8-30%, the molten THAQ can be used as it is, and the enolation of the product can be prevented.
