NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R<1> is benzyl which may have substituent group). EXAMPLE:O-benzyl-[6]-dehydrogingerol. USE:An intermediate enabling the easy and industrial production of [6]-gengerol and [6]-shogaol (the drug component of analgesic or antitussive, etc., extractable from the rhizome of ginger) with shortened steps, without producing unstable intermediates. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared easily by (1) condensing the compound of formula II with acetone by aldol condensation, (2) protecting the phenolic OH of the resultant compound of formula III with R<1>, (3) reacting with a proper base to obtain the anion of formula IV, and (4) adding the anion to n-hexanal. Since the obtained compound can be subjected to the reduction of the double bond of the side chain simultaneously to the reductive elimination of the group R<1> without causing the reduction of the side chain ketone, it can be converted to the medicinal drugs of formula V-VI economically by dehydration.
