Band material is coated on one side with a solvent-based coating using a scraper blade (2) fitted against a rotary spreading roller (4). Coating substance is supplied at (7) into the trough (11) formed by the roller and blade. The direction of rotation of the roller is such that the surface of the roller moves downwards at the contact point between the roller and blade. The coating substance is transferred from the roller onto the surface of the band material running in contact with the roller.
