PURPOSE:To provide a fireproofing coating material employing an elastic synthetic resin emulsion as main binder and containing hydrated sodium tetraborate, which generates no harmful gas when heated and forms a heat insulating layer to protect a coated substrate against fire. CONSTITUTION:The fireproofing coating material employs an elastic synthetic resin emulsion (e.g. acrylic elastic synthetic resin emulsion) as main binder and contains hydrated sodium tetraborate (e.g. borax decahydrate or lasorite pentahydrate). The coating material does not generate harmful gases such as chlorine and hydrocyanic acid under heating. Upon heating, hydrated sodium tetraborate loses water of crystallization and foams to form a film expanded several times as large as its original volume, which acts as heat insulating layer to protect a coated substrate against fire.
