PURPOSE:The titled shutter with good contrast and response, prepd. by using a chiral smectic C liquid crystal to which a pigment having an absorption region near the wavelength of a GaAlAs semiconductor laser. CONSTITUTION:The titled shutter prepd. by using a chiral smectic C liquid crystal such as a liquid crystal material of the formula II or III to which a pigment of the formula I, such as LCD109 (manufactured by Nihon Kayaku) having an absorption region (peak wavelength of 760nm) near the peak wavelength (780nm) of a GaAlAs semiconductor laser. Said shutter has remarkably good contrast, response and controllability, and good performance in simplicity, matching property to a driving portion and low cost.
