PURPOSE:To prevent the corrosion of a boiler using fossil fuel by SOx or V oxides of higher order in combustion gas by adding V oxides of higher order and an Al or S compound to the combustion gas when the partial pressure of oxygen in the gas is low and high, respectively. CONSTITUTION:The corrosion of a boiler using fuel having high S and V contents such as petroleum or coal by SOx takes place severely in combustion gas having a low partial pressure of O2 and rich in CO and unburnt C. Ash of V oxides of higher order such as V2O5 and Na2O.V2O5 deposited in the furnace of a heavy oil combustion boiler is recovered and added to the combustion gas. The partial pressure of O2 in the gas is increased by the decomposition of V2O5 into V2O4 and O2 to prevent the corrosion of the boiler by SOx. V2O4 does not corrode the boiler because of the high m.p. In combustion gas having a high partial pressure of O2, low m.p. V2O5 and Na2O.V2O5 cause corrosion, so Al2O3 or SiO2 is added to prevent corrosion by accelerated oxidation by the low m.p. V oxides.
