PURPOSE:To obtain a multicolor display element reversibly changeable in color by changing voltage to be applied and a multicolor display device using it by utilizing the property of the oxidized polymer of an aromatic amine or its derivs. changeable in color in an electrolytic soln. in accordance with the voltage to be applied. CONSTITUTION:The oxidized polymer of the aromatic amine or its derivs. is prepared on a working electrode by using platinum, nesa glass, or the like for the working electrode, platinum or the like for an opposite electrode, and Ag-AgCl as a standard electrode, and electrolytically oxidizing said amine, such as aniline, phenylenediamine, or aminophenol, and hydrogen halide, an alkali metal salt, or the like is used for the electrolytic soln., and the electrolytic oxidation is executed, especially, at a pH of 1-4. The working electrode coated with the oxidized polymer film thus obtained is washed with water, and used as the working electrode, and the opposite electrode and the standard electrode same as before are used, and they are immersed in an aq. soln. of LiCl and HCl, and the potential to be applied is changed to change color and for example, a multicolor display device changing color in accordance with the potential, as shown in table II, is used.
