PURPOSE:To eliminate superimposed writing of video signals by mistake, by recording the video signals after checking a previously designated track area without omission. CONSTITUTION:Before starting recording after the recording starting track and number of tracks to be used for recording of a disk 1 are inputted to a system control 25 from a keyboard 24 as a recording track area, the system control 25 inputs jump pulses (k) to a tracking controlling circuit 34 at a cycle of about 1-2msec to check whether or not the designated recording track area is under a unwritten condition and causes an optical head 16 to jump from track to track. At the same time, the control 25 causes a light spot (S) to move by jumping from track to track as shown by points S1!-S6 at a high speed and, while the light spot (S) is moved checks the output of a reproduced RF signal detecting circuit 36.
