PURPOSE:To convert a beam width while holding the uniformity of power distribution of a surface acoustic wave after beam width conversion by varying the film thickness of the surface acoustic wave guide thin film of a beam width converter in the direction orthogonal to the propagation direction of the surface acoustic wave. CONSTITUTION:An incident surface acoustic wave 1 is made incident on the incidence end A-A' of a surface acoustic wave beam width converter 5 and is propagated in a dielectric thin film of the converter 5 and is discharged from an exit end E-E' as an exit surface acoustic wave 2. Since the dielectric thin film of the beam width converter 5 has a film thickness distribution in the direction orthogonal to the propagation direction of the surface acoustic wave, the propagation direction of the surface acoustic wave propagated in the converter 5 is deflected to the direction of the thicker film. This film thick ness distribution is set to a desired shape, and thereby, the surface acoustic wave has a uniform power distribution after it is radiated from the exit end E-E' to become the exit surface acoustic wave 2 having a beam width LB.
