[Also in Division G6] For joining a mass of pure or alloyed aluminium to a cylindrical member 14 of titanium, nickel, " Monel," " Inconel " (Trade Marks), or stainless steel, e.g. to form a device to be welded or brazed to the cap closure for a nuclear fuel can, with a stainless steel tube 14 as a passage for a thermocouple through the can, the part of the member 14 to be joined is inserted in a mass of molten aluminium and rotated at high speed about its axis before cooling the aluminium and machining it. The joining of the metals may be done in vacuum or inert gas and the tube 14 may be cooled by water circulation in an inserted sleeve 34, Fig. 3 (not shown). The tube 14 is first degreased and may then be machined to increase its surface roughness. It is rotated periodically in the molten aluminium to wet it. By withdrawing the tube 14 from the molten metal before complete cooling, a part only of the aluminium is raised, Fig. 3 (not shown), and if the tube rotation is continued while raising the aluminium is formed as a tubular member 46<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 4 (not shown), whose thickness varies according to the rate of withdrawal. |
