The washing machine is equipped with a water supply system regulated by the water level. The water volume supplied at the beginning of the washing programme is registered by a measuring device and different washing process criteria such as the water level, the number of washing or rinsing processes etc. can be determined in accordance with the supply volume. Water level-related values registered by the measuring installation are fed to a plotter and processed in such a way that the measured level fluctuations per filling process and the number of subsequent fillings registered via a counter are supplied to a computer. These measuring and recorded values represent the criterion for the absorbency of the type of laundry input in the programme control.
