PURPOSE:To obtain a polybutadkiene of outstanding characteristics as rubber in high yield having both high contents of 1, 2-and cis-1,4,-structures, by polymerization, in the presence of a specific compound, of 1,3-butadiene. CONSTITUTION:Objective polybutadiene can be obtained by polymerization of 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a catalytic system consisting of (A) a halogen- contg, organoaluminum compound, (B) either (i) cobalt dithiocarbamate com pound or (ii) a reaction product from carbon disalfide, secondary amine and cobalt compound, (C) water and (D) a free radical scavenger. This polybutadiene has the following characteristics: 1. content of 1,2-microstructure ...7-50%, 2. content of cis-1,4-microstructure ...>=50%, 3. content of trans-1,4-microstructure ...<=5%, 4. intrinsic viscosity measured in the form of toluene solution at 30 deg.C ...>=1, 5. gel content ...<=0.03%.
