PURPOSE:To prevent performance deterioration in spite of decrease in mercury content of amalgamated zinc negative electrode by immersing a long current collecting rod obtained by joining two metal rods in a gelled zinc negative electrode. CONSTITUTION:A positive mix 12, a separator 14, and a gelled zinc negative electrode 16 are coaxially accommodated in a cylindrical positive can 10 having a bottom. Mercury content of amalgamated zinc of the negative electrode 16 is as low as 4% or less. The opening of the positive can 10 is sealed with a negative terminal plate 20 combined with a sealing gasket 18. A metal current collecting rod 22 obtained by joining two metal rods is inserted in the center of the gelled zinc negative electrode 16. Since the current collecting rod is slender and long, current collection is improved. Therefore, good discharge performance is kept in spite of decrease in mercury content of the negative electrode 16 to 4% or less. |
