A solid-state load switch which is connected in parallel with two separable contact elements leads the current away from these contact elements while said contact elements are separated in order to extinguish the arc which is struck between said contact elements. A zener diode inside the solid-state switch switches a triac on when the contact arc voltage reaches a specific magnitude, in order to transfer the current to a capacitor. When the capacitor voltage reaches the terminal voltage of a metal-oxide varistor which is connected in parallel with the capacitor, the current to the metal-oxide varistor then changes over and falls rapidly towards zero.
