PURPOSE:To read a picture at a constant speed by providing x-set of light emitting side fibers transmitting the light from x-set of light emitting elements to x-set read points on paper and x-set photodetector side fibers transmitting the reflected light to a photodetector. CONSTITUTION:When a CPU30 outputs a drive signal and a drive motor 12 is turned, a read head is reciprocated. After the moving speed of the read head reaches a constant speed, when a read timing pulse is inputted to the CPU30, the 1st read section Di1 of each set is opposed to plural spots Si at the same time. In this case the CPU30 lights selectively the light emitting element Li1 opposed to each read section Di1 via a light emitting element drive circuit 35 at the same time. The light from each light emitting element Li1 is irradiated to each spot Si on paper through the light emitting side fiber Ti1, the reflected light is made incident at the same time on plural photodetectors Pi through each photodetector side fiber Ri1. Every time each read section crosses the read point, the picture on paper is read, then the read speed is quickened.
