In a sliding roof for motor vehicles whose rigid cover is moved, with the interposition of a lifting and lowering device, via a transfer bridge, there is provided a central drive which is composed of a slit tube fixed to the body, in which a driving element which is stiff in tension and in compression and intended for the transfer bridge is guided. The transfer bridge and the cover are provided on the interior compartment side with a covering, the associated covering section being overlapped by means of a step-shaped end section of the cover. So that no covering section pushes against the tube when the cover is slid back, the tube is received by a sliding sleeve which has a flap on the end of it and is connected to the covering of the transfer bridge, and when the end of the pipe runs up against the flap the latter is pivoted downwards counter to the force of a spring and bridges the transition region between the two coverings.
