A device for monitoring status variables, in particular the air pressure in the tyre of a vehicle wheel is proposed, in which device a sensor unit (11) which is arranged on the vehicle wheel (10) transmits a transmission signal which varies as a function of the air pressure in the tyre (13) to a receiver (14) which is fixedly arranged on the vehicle. In order to supply power to the sensor unit (11), at least one dry battery (17) is provided on the vehicle wheel. In order to keep the power consumption of the sensor unit (11) as low as possible in order to relieve the battery (17), the battery (17) is connected to the sensor unit (11) via a centrifugal force switch (18) which is opened when the wheel (10) is stationary and closed when the vehicle wheel rotates. Both the tyre pressure and the tyre temperature can be monitored with the sensor unit by means of corresponding sensors. <IMAGE>
