PURPOSE:To achieve automation, by checking changes in the shape of the liquid surface due to surface tension or capillary phenomenon in the contact of a liquid with a matter as variations in the reflected light level to detect the position of the liquid depending on the reflected light level. CONSTITUTION:Light from a light emitting element 6 is projected to the liquid surface 3 through a fiber 7 for transmission of light. But when a pipet 5 does not contact the supernatant, the reflected light from the liquid surface 3 is incident into a light receiving element 8 through a light receiving fiber 9 and a fixed light emitting level is detected with a processing circuit 11. When the pipet 5 mounted on a vertically moving mechanism 10 lowers and contacts the liquid surface 3 to sample, the received light level changes. In other words, with the movement of the pipet 5, the output of the light receiving element 8 changes the moment the pipet 5 contacts the liquid surface 3 and falls from the fixed level. Thus, the received light level falls according to charges in the shape of the liquid surface 3 when the pipet 5 contacts the liquid surface 3 thereby allowing the detection of the liquid surface 3. |
