PURPOSE:To prepare easily and rapidly contents index documents and to prepare the efficient document without inputting the contents index information newly by installing a means to designate a character column which is an object for the contents and the retrieval during preparing the document. CONSTITUTION:At an input device 1, a contents index object character column designating means and in addition, a contents or index preparing designating means to designate respectively a character column, a contents object and a character column, an index object are installed. When the data processing is executed, first, the data inputted from the device 1 are stored through an input buffer 2, a editing control part 5, etc., to a document storing part 6. Next, the data to prepare the contents or the index are inputted from the device 1, and further, the indication of the object character column is inputted, and therefore, the contents or index information is added to the object character data stored at the memory part 6 by the control part 5. Thus, the contents index information is not inputted newly, the contents index document can be easily and rapidly prepared, and the preparation of the document can be made efficient.
