PURPOSE:To improve the durability of the titled magnetic recording medium and a magnetic head by forming a lubricating layer on a recording magnetic layer through an Si-N-O thin film. CONSTITUTION:A Co-Cr alloy thin film 2, for example, is formed on both surfaces of a resinous film base body 1 as the recording magnetic layer. The thin film 2 is oriented so that an easy magnetization axis vertical to the surface of the film may be formed, and provided with vertical magnetic anisotropy. Then an Si-N-O thin film 3 is respectively formed on the thin film 2, and a fluorocarbon liq. lubricating layer, for example, is further coated and formed on the thin film 3 as a lubricating layer 4. The thin film 3 thus formed is amorphous and conformably adhered to the thin film 2, and the lubricating layer 4 has excellent wettability and holding capacity. Consequently, the durability of the magnetic recording medium and a magnetic head can be improved.
