PURPOSE:To obtain a high-purity white epoxysuccinic acid in easily separable state, without causing side reactions, by contacting an epoxysuccinic acid salt with a strong acid using an inert solvent consisting of a mixture of ether or ketone solvent and a hydrocarbon solvent. CONSTITUTION:An epoxysuccinic acid salt is made to contact with a strong acid in the presence of an inert solvent to obtain epoxysuccinic acid. The solid impurities are removed from the reaction solution, and the expoxysuccinic acid is recovered from the purified liquid. In the above process for the synthesis and separation of epoxysuccinic acid, a mixed solvent consisting of an ether solvent or ketone solvent (e.g. acetone, tetrahydrofuran, etc.) and a hydrocarbon solvent (e.g. benzene) is used as the inert solvent. A combination of a ketone solvent and a hydrocarbon solvent is preferable in view of the reaction yield. The epoxysuccinic acid can be separated by a simple crystallization process by the use of said solvent.
