摘要 NEW MATERIAL:The optically active compound of formula I (m is 0-8, preferably 1-7, especially 2-4; n is 5-14, preferably 6-12, especially 8-11; X is halogen, OH or CN; *represent asymmetric carbon atom). EXAMPLE:Optically active 5-n-octyl-1-[4-(3'-chloropentyloxy)phenyl]-pyrimidine. USE:A component of a liquid crystal composition. Effective especially as a blending agent to obtain a composition having the liquid crystal temperature near room temperature or a blending agent to promote the response. It is an excellent liquid crystal material to obtain a practical Sc* liquid crystal composition having a liquid crystal temperature range including room temperature, and is useful as an electro-optic element utilizing the response of a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal to electrical field. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I wherein X is halogen can be prepared e.g. by reacting the compound of formula II (X is halogen; Y is tosyl) with the compound of formula II in the presence of an alkali metal or a condensation agent.
