PURPOSE:To reduce man power, to reduce the cost of an encoder, to obtain a stable output and to improve characteristics by moving a movable holder through the rotation of a gap adjusting screw, and adjusting the gap between a magnetic drum and a magneto-resistance element. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic drum 11 is fitted on the rotating shaft 13 of a motor 12. The magneto-resistance element 15 is fitted to the movable holder 14 made of synthetic resin and a wedgelike projection part 17 provided atop of the gap adjusting screw 16 is embedded and fixed in the center part of the back surface. An encoder case 19 is fitted to a fixed holder 18 made of synthetic resin and a guide piece 20 which guides the movement of the movable holder 14 toward the magnetic drum is provided. Further, the gap adjusting screw 16 is fitted penetrating the fixed holder 18 threadably and moves at screw pitch. The movable holder 14 to which the element 15 is fitted moves toward the magnetic drum while having its position controlled by the guide piece 20 of the fixed holder 18.
