PURPOSE:A carboxylic acid bearing a cyclic imide group is allowed to react with an epihalohydrin, the reaction product is epoxidized under substantially anhydrous conditions in the presence of a specific alkali to produce the title compound which contains a reduced amount of halogen and gives cured products of high heat and chemical resistance. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic carboxylic acid bearing at least 2 carboxylic groups in adjacent positions such as tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride is subjected to dehydration reaction with an aromatic mono- or diamine which may be substituted with carboxyls such as 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane to prepare a compound which have at least 2 carboxyls on the chain ends and a cylic imide group. The resultant compound is allowed to react with (beta-substituted) opihalohydrin, at 70-130 deg.C. The resultant halohydrin ester is epoxidized under anhydrous conditions in the presence of an alkali metal salt, alkaline earth metal salt to give the objective compound with an acid value of 0 and a halogen content of less than 1 wt%, usually 0.01 to 0.5wt%.
