PURPOSE:To enable simple measurement and its durable practiceability of slag layer thickness, by thrusting at least one of conductive ceramic electrodes of different lengths into molten metal melt. CONSTITUTION:A slag layer thickness detector 11 lead wires of which are fed from each electrode is dipped into oxide slag 12 floating in a furnace 13 with molten steel 14. Lead wire switching terminals 1'-9' corresponding to ceramic electrode 1-9 of the detector 11 are connected to a switch 15 and connections are made to universal bridge 17 and since-curve wave generator 16. And, while switching wires 2'-9' by the switch 15, measurement is made on resistances between the electrode 1 and those 2-9, then, specific resistance of the molten steel 14 is indicated between electrode 1 and those 2-3, and the specific resistance of the slag 12 between electrode 1 and those 4-7 and infinitive resistance between electrode 1 and those 8, 9. By this, it can be detected that the thickness of slag 12 is located between length difference of between electrodes 4-7 and of 3-6. By using a ceramic electrode, long durable operation can be realized.
