PURPOSE:To obtain a novel polymer useful as a base for a heat-resistant coating compound and adhesive, by polymerizing 4-(4'-vinyl)biphenyl 2,3-epoxypropyl ether in the presence of a radical polymerization catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Novel 4-(4'-vinyl)biphenyl 2,3-epoxypropyl ether usually 0.1-5mol/l concentration in a solvent such as THF, benzene, etc. is polymerized in the presence of a radical polymerization catalyst (preferably 1X10<-4>-1X10<-1>mol/l cumene hydroperoxide, benzoyl peroxide, etc. is used) to give a novel polymer shown by the formula (n>=2). 4-(4'-vinyl)biphenyl 2,3- epoxypropyl ether as a staring raw material, for example, is obtained by reacting novel 4-hydroxy-4'-vinylbiphenyl obtained from p-phenylphenol with an epihalohydrin.
