The method is for equipment in which carbonic acid gas is used for the tapping of beer or other gaseous drinks from a barrel. The emptied barrels still containing carbonic acid gas are transported to a unit recovering this gas and pumping it into a storage vessel, from which it can be supplied again for barrel tapping. - The unit can comprise a non-return valve mounted on the union head of the empty barrel, with a pump transferring the gas in the latter to an expansion vessel. A spiral tube between vessel and pump separates bilge-water and heavier gases. The conduit between the pump and the barrel is fitted with an electromagnetic valve and is blocked when there is a change of pressure in the conduit between the expansion barrel and the spinal tube.
