<p>The iodopher, for pharmacological use as an antiseptic due to its germicidal properties, is made by adding an aq. KI soln. to an aq. soln. of polyvinyl pyrrolidone, then aq. KIO3 soln., and finally dil. HCl in amt. sufficient to react all the iodate with the iodide, forming iodine, in amt. of 10 wt.% of the PVP. An excess of 10% KIO3 above the theoretical amt. is used.
